State, Political Economy And Governanc - 2013 Words
State, Political Economy and Governanc HOW DO YOU ENCOUNTER STATE AND CITIZENSHIP IN YOUR DAILY LIFE? UNDERSTANDING STATE: The modern word state has been derived from the word ââ¬Å"statusâ⬠earlier employed by Teutons. It was Niccolo Machiavelli who first used the term ââ¬Å"stateâ⬠in political science. From the beginning of social life, mankind has lived under some kind of authority. The authority has varied in its nature and has exercised its function through different forms of organisation. Beneath these differences in the concrete manifestation of political lifemay be observed a practical identity of purpose, and by disregarding non-essential elements and modification that ariseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Politically organized people of a definite territory iii. An organization of public law that is monopolistic over the use of violence against a group or population iv. An organization which in internal matters carries out its function through a unified set of institutions known as the government. ELEMENTS OF THE STATE: The state, as said earlier may be viewed as both a concrete thing and an abstract idea. A concrete thing means that it is specific human group or association and viewed in abstract terms, it is a corporation possessing a juristic personality. The state is composed of both physical and metaphysical elements. These elements are: i. A group of human beings, i.e. population (population) ii. A territory upon which they permanently reside (territory) iii. Internal sovereignty and independence from foreign control (sovereignty) iv. A political organization or agency through which the collective will of the population is expressed, i.e. government (government) Absence of any one of these elements nullifies the state: all must exist together. The state is not people, nor the land nor the government, but all of them in addition; the state must possess that unity which makes it a distinct and independent political entity. These features are common to all states, irrespective of their historically specific manifestation. For e.g., it applies to the Greek City states, the medieval kingdom, the modern monarchy and all the other kinds of states that

Synthesis Of Alum From Aluminum Can Pieces - 1506 Words
Synthesis of Alum from Aluminum Can Pieces *Marita John, Crystal Chacko, and Natalie Luera CHEM 111-553 Introduction: There is a great demand in industries to recycle aluminum for a salt such as dyeing of textiles, manufacturing of pickles, baking powder, leather tanning, and as a flocculant in water purification, etc. The negative ionic charge of alum of potassium and its molecular structure makes this compound unable to be absorbed by the skin, therefore, it is sometimes used as antiperspirants by deodorant industries. The energy needed to produce new aluminum from the secondary aluminum product through recycling s is less energy than creating brand new products of aluminum. Before pouring the reaction mixture into the filter, the filter paper was wetted using distilled water. A pair of tongs were used to transfer the reaction into the filter from the beaker. After most of the reaction was in the filte r, the beaker was rinsed twice with 5mL of distilled water each time. The contents of the rinse in the beaker were emptied into the filter. After the filtration was complete and the dark residue of the aluminum can pieces was separated from the clear reaction mixture, the filtrate was transferred into another clean 250mL beaker. Then the filter flask was rinsed with 10mL of distilled water and added to the filtrate in the new reaction beaker. Then 20mL of 6.0M sulfuric acid was carefully added to the reaction beaker while being stirred with a stir rod. A stir bar was inserted into the reaction and the beaker was put on top of a hot plate to dissolve the solids that formed. After the solids were dissolved, the reaction was filtered with a vacuum filter as done previously. The reaction beaker was cooled in an ice bath created by adding ice chips and water to a larger beaker for the alum crystals to precipitate. The True Test free essay sample
I traveled 95 miles in 12days in the New Mexico wilderness with a 55 pound backpack on my back. I was in charge. Last summer, I went with a contingent of three fellow scouters and two adult advisors to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, for a two week adventure. Before the trip, I was elected to be crew leader because I am an Eagle Scout. I have scouted since first grade and demonstrated the leadership qualities needed for this adventure. Throughout the trip, my leadership skills were tested. A fellow scouter in our sister crew got hit in the head with a huge stick and needed stitches. The incident happened when our sister crew was playing a game. As soon as I saw what happened, I rushed over to the injured scouter and organized a group to help get him down to the health lodge. He was okay a day later and rejoined us. It was my job to make sure this never happened and I was successful. In one case, I convinced a scout he would be safer putting his food covered shirt in the bear bag. After he agreed, he was allowed back in his tent after being pushed out by his tent mates. Never again will I be able to sit on top of a mountain and be able to see for miles in every direction. Never again will I be able to be five feet away from a rattle snake and not be scared or see a United States Air Force Bomber flying inches above the tree line. Or be feet away from a bear that was trying to invade our campsite. Even though I will not be able to experiences these events again, they will live on with me forever. When I first got back, people asked me if I would ever do it again. My original response was no. But after I thought about it, after I thought about how much fun I had, how much I learned, and how much I enjoyed being away from everything, I would have to say I would.

The Chinese Art
Formal Perspective The Chinese art-piece, which will be discussed in this paper, is the Spouted Ritual Water Vessel from the 7th-6th century B.C. (IMG_4028.JPG). The pieceââ¬â¢s utilitarian purpose is concerned with its ability to hold liquids. It features a rather elongated spout and richly decorated handle and supporting legs.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Chinese Art-piece ââ¬Å"Spouted Ritual Water Vesselâ⬠specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The latter resemble of what could have been the legs of some mythical animal. The vesselââ¬â¢s outer sides also feature a fair amount of decorative elements. In its turn, this implies that there is indeed a good rationale to think of this particular art-piece, as such that has been greatly treasured by the affiliates of the concerned historical period in China. The fact that, as it can be seen on the picture, there are no signs of any visible wear on this water vessel, suggests that it has been used on rare occasions. Technical perspective Given the actual material, out of which the Spouted Ritual Water Vessel was made (bronze), we can well assume that, in terms of a technological development, the ancient Chinese were not falling behind ancient Greeks, for example. Apparently, in order to be able to produce bronze, people are supposed to possess a certain awareness of what happens when copper is being alloyed with tin. This, however, can only be the case with those who have evolved to the point of being able to maintain a civilization of their own. The validity of this statement can also be illustrated in regards to the fact that, as the image of the Spouted Ritual Water Vessel points out too, its creators thoroughly mastered the technology of a lost-wax casting. In essence, this technology is being concerned with artists making a wax-mold of whatever the object that they intend to produce, allowing a gypsum-cast to form around it, a nd filling the obtained cast with molten bronze. It is understood, of course, that the earlier mentioned technology implies that its affiliates, at the time of an ancient antiquity, were utterly industrious people, fully capable of remaining on the path of progress. Social perspective The Spouted Ritual Water Vessel has been mainly used for a variety of ritual purposes, such as symbolizing the fluidity of oneââ¬â¢s life, during the course of religious ceremonies. The itemââ¬â¢s rich ornamentation validates the legitimacy of this suggestion, as it implies the vesselââ¬â¢s high value, which in turn sheds doubts on the idea that the concerned art-piece could have been used as an ordinary household article. The earlier provided suggestion presupposes that it was primarily the members of the Chinaââ¬â¢s ruling class/nobility, for whom the Spouted Ritual Water Vessel was meant to serve initially. This is because the itemââ¬â¢s rich decorations imply that, along with having been considered ââ¬Ësacredââ¬â¢, it has also been deemed utterly expensive.Advertising Looking for essay on art? The vesselââ¬â¢s another use could have been concerned with helping diseased people to feel thoroughly ââ¬Ëaccommodatedââ¬â¢ in the afterlife. For this purpose, the item would have been placed in the coffin along with the diseased individual. The soundness of this statement can be shown, in regards to how the ancient Chinese used to reflect upon the meaning of death. Gig
Gig Gig Gig By Maeve Maddox A reader objects to the expanding use of the noun gig beyond the meaning it has for musicians: I have received an invitation to attend a revegetation gig at a local riverside park in Brisbane Australia. I know that music bands play at gigs, but to use gig to mean a getting together of people forà any communal effort, seems pretty sloppy to me. Where does that gig come from anyway? The word gig, as both noun and verb, has a long history in English. Its etymology in any of its applications is unknown. In the 15th century, a gig was a childââ¬â¢s spinning toy. In the 18th century, a gig was a light one-horse carriage. When I was a child, I heard fishermen speak of gigs used to spear frogs and fish. Not until I went to college did I learn about the musical type of gig. Some definitions stress that a gig is of short duration: gig (noun): An engagement for a musician or musicians playing jazz, dance-music, etc. Specifically, a ââ¬Ëone-night stand.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âOED gig (noun): A single professional engagement, usually of short duration, as of jazz or rock musicians.à ââ¬âDictionary.com Here are examples of this use of gig: One of the biggest bands in the world, the Foo Fighters, are set to play two massive gigs in Australia and New Zealand to raise money for the victims of the floods and the earthquake. Welcome to the wonderful world of professional church and temple gigs in NYC. Gig to mean any kind of job is documented in the OED as early as 1964 in a citation that refers to a man (presumably a musician) who has to work ââ¬Å"a mail-handler gig at the Post Officeâ⬠to supplement his income. Nowadays, any kind of jobââ¬âof long or short durationââ¬âis referred to as a gig: I quit that cushy job, sold my sports car, and hitchhiked to Louisiana, where I landed a spiritual gig working tugs and barges from Galveston, Texas thru Venice, Louisiana. The Green Rolling Hills, ed. V. J. Banis, Wildside Press, 2008. A college professor who lost his [tenured] job over anti-Semitic tweets is angry about losing the gig, but not sorry about his Twitter missives. Former Windows boss lands teaching gig at Harvard This housekeeping gig isnââ¬â¢t so bad. I get continental breakfasts every day and discount hotel rooms. Gig is also used in the sense of session or appointment: The all-night study gig: a rite of passage Olympic womens hockey goalie scores practice gig with Edmonton Oilers Batting-practice gig with Bonds a dream Musicians may have introduced it into the language, but gig has caught on in colloquial speech as a useful word for everyone. Strategic Management of France Telecoms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Strategic Management of France Telecoms - Essay Example The case study shows there is a large-scale change in the telecommunications industry. The telecommunications industry continues to grow into a more complex market segment in the past 20 years. Some smaller telecommunications companies have joined larger competitors in the same telecommunications industry to survive. The large-scale change in the telecommunications industry is grounded on the transformation of the prior telephone services- based telecoms industry to producing phones that offer many exclusive features. The features include internet, ebook reading, camera, calculator, internet, word software, games, radio, broadcasting, relay, satellite, and video recording advantages (Abele, 2008). The European Unionââ¬â¢s telecommunications industry is guided by the European Commissionââ¬â¢s policies on telecommunications. In 1990, the European Commission issued a services directive 90/388/ECC stating that the telecommunications industry is now open to competition. However, the re European Unionââ¬â¢s regulatory policies have aided in establishing large-scale restructuring of the telecommunications industry over the past 20 long years. The companyââ¬â¢s strive to increase its current revenue output and profit performance is one of the triggers that forced telecommunications companies to implement the right strategic changes to the companyââ¬â¢s current revenue-generating processes and profit-enhancing activities. The dot.com bubble burst is one of the many external drivers that triggered the change in the telecommunications industry. Likewise, the liberalization of the telecommunications market segment is an external factor that triggered the change in the telecommunications industry. Each telecommunications company had to implement drastic changes in its current marketing, operations, and management processes in order to keep abreast of or even surpass the revenue performance, profit performance, and production performance of each telecommunicati ons industry player.
